Artist in Residence Program

Learn from the professionals, and never leave your own classroom!

Invite one of our teaching artists into your classroom—for an hour, for a day, once a week, or for a whole semester. Enliven your school curriculum with a Human Race Theatre Residency for your elementary, middle or high school.

Residencies are custom-designed especially for your needs. Students are provided with exciting interdisciplinary learning experiences which will enhance their social skills, team-building abilities and cooperative spirit as well as help them develop problem-solving strategies. Their creativity and confidence will soar!

Whether you are interested in your students learning basic theatre skills or story drama, Shakespeare, Ohio History, Native American poetry, Myths and Folklore, or your choice of curricular area, our teaching artists can share their talents with your students. Residencies can culminate in a performance or they can be developmental in nature.

To schedule a residency in your school, contact Education Director Marilyn Klaben at (937) 461-3823 ext. 3132 or marilyn@humanracetheatre.org.

Current Residency Programs

The Actor’s Toolbox

This one-hour workshop is an introduction to the skills of an actor: expressive voice, flexible body, an active imagination and the power of focus.
Fee: $85.00 (Limit: 20 students per workshop)
This workshop can also be held at our Philips Creativity Center in downtown Dayton.

The S.T.E.M. of Technical Theatre

Taught by one of The Human Race Theatre’s technical staff members, this two-hour workshop introduces students to the backstage world of theatre: design and building technique for scenery, lighting, sound, costumes and props utilizing math concepts of measurements, angles, lengths, proportion and fractions, and the scientific concepts of weights, counter-balancing, pulleys and levers, machinery, projection and more.
Fee: $185.00 (Limit: 30 students per workshop)
This workshop is held at the Loft Theatre in downtown Dayton.

Afterschool Workshops in Theatre

Students participate in interactive theatre activities each week that challenge and inspire their creative spirit, improve their team-building abilities and help them develop their problem-solving skills. Can culminate in a play production, if desired. Workshops are held bi-monthly on a weekday afternoon from 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. for 10 weeks.
Fee: $1,300.00 (Limit: 20 students per workshop)
This workshop can also be held at our Philips Creativity Center in downtown Dayton.

Shakespeare Theatre

This semester-long introduction to Shakespearean drama and performance skills culminates in a polished production of one of Shakespeare’s plays. Classes meet for two hours a day, two days a week for a total of 24 visits.
Fee: $3,800.00 (Limit: 25 students per workshop)

Touring Production

Each year we create a new 40-minute production to be presented at regional middle and high schools that touches on specific subjects and themes. This season we present the one-woman show Shuffle Off This Mortal Coil, conceived and directed by Aaron Vega and performed by Andréa Morales. Shuffle Off This Mortal Coil introduces students to characters and situations from William Shakespeare’s plays while accessing the Bard’s poetry and themes. The performance helps students make direct connections to the universal themes of Shakespeare’s work, while also learning about man himself.
Fee: Call for more information on pricing and technical requirements

Custom Workshops

It’s a program created exclusively for your students. Our artists can tie in lessons with a specific curriculum area, work with students on scripted material in a plan that culminates in a play production or focus on any number of theatrical areas you wish them to learn about.
Fee: Dependent on scope of work and class size
