The Loft Season – Our signature subscription season at The Loft Theatre consists of plays and musicals, recent releases and classics. Most productions on The Loft Season are rehearsed and produced in Dayton. The Human Race produces under a Small Professional Theatre contract with Actors Equity Association (AEA), the union of professional actors and stage managers.
Musical Theatre Workshop – The Human Race operates a residency and workshop series designed to develop new works and showcase rarely produced works. The Residency is a ten-day to two-week program that brings the writing team together for an un-interrupted work session with a handful of musical theatre artists. Our Workshop is a two-week program - working with professional performers/directors - and culminating in, at least, 2 public performances in a staged concert format.
Preview Performance – This preview performance is on the Thursday evening prior to our Friday evening openings. It is a significantly reduced price and is available for both subscription and single ticket buyers.
Pay What You Can – A special preview performance with admittance by the donation of cash to the Aids Resource Center Ohio or canned goods/non-perishable food items to The Food Bank. This serves community needs as well as patrons who may find the regular performances more than their budgets can afford. Download a Pay What You Can schedule.
Inside Track – A preshow discussion with the director held at 7:15 in The Loft Lobby during the Thursday Preview. This is an opportunity for the audience to meet the director and hear from the horse’s mouth the Inside Scoop at the Race.
While We’re On The Subject – A moderated discussion held with the cast and the audience members immediately following the matinee performance on the second Sunday of each production. Frequently a guest joins the group to offer unique commentary concerning the topics brought to light by the production
Victoria Theatre Association’s Broadway Series – Once a year The Human Race Theatre Company is invited to produce for the VTA’s Broadway Series, usually a comedy or musical. We are very proud of this 24 year old tradition.
Lite Fare at The Loft – On the regular Tuesday performance of the run of each production, you can enjoy great food and drink in The Loft Theatre lobby before the show. Inexpensive gourmet sandwiches, delicious desserts and other quick food items will be provided by Citilites restaurant, with special beers and wines featured at the bar. Service starts at 5:30 pm to accommodate the 7:00 pm curtain.
Concessions – Wine, beer, mixed drinks, and snack items are available in our lobby for every show. Drinks may be taken into The Loft during the performance.
EDUCATION PROGRAMS OF THE HUMAN RACE
Adventures in Theatre – Designed for our youngest students (ages 6-12), classes are built around a topic that uses theatre skills to develop interactive skills and imagination. Each class is unique, allowing a beginning student to join at any point in the year. The repeating student sees a growth and maturity in skills as they progress. Creative play includes storytelling, writing/improvisation of dialogue, playing roles, making puppets and producing mini-plays. Classes are scheduled in 5-week sessions, one meeting per week.
Theatre Education Classes – Individually scheduled classes for students of all ages are offered to explore a specific topic and may meet once or multiple times, depending upon the instructor. Offerings may change over the course of a year.
Lovewell Experience – Another collaboration, this 3 week intensive is focused on teens. They are guided by Human Race and Lovewell artists as they tap their inner creative powers. The result is a musical - conceptualized, written, composed, choreographed and performed by the teens in The Loft Theatre. This summer program is open to all teenagers.
Summer Stock Kids – An extension of the Adventures In Theatre, this summer camp is designed to give students a rehearsal/performance experience with scripts adapted from children’s literature.
Theatre in Context – A curriculum based education program with The Muse Machine that combines a mainstage production from The Loft Season with an In-School Tour as well as teacher training and additional student experiences. In a given year, the program may revolve around a specific author, historical period or idea.
In-School Tour – Each year we develop a 45-minute touring production for middle and high schools that is part of our Theatre in Context program. Past productions have included Shakespeare, Twain, Steinbeck, Sophocles, and Chekhov as well as several original scripts.
Teen Conservatory – This newly revamped program consists of two sessions, Fall session is 10 weeks and Winter session is 8 weeks. The first is a series of intensive actor-training workshops with HR Resident Artists and other theatre artisans. The second is a fully produced family-friendly production of an American play hand-selected to provide each teen with a challenging performance opportunity.
Private Coaching – Private Coaching Sessions are available for students ages 16 – Adult in Acting, Singing and/or Audition Preparation.
